If you make any modification to your RE system (i.e. adding solar panels), you will need to re-apply your system under the Net-Metering program. Please reach out to Meralco for assistance.

Applying for the Net-Metering program with Meralco is free of charge.

However, other charges may apply if necessary:

  1. Difference in Meter Cost (DIMC) - if your existing meter needs to be replaced with a bi-directional meter. Based on the latest ERC advisory dated 22 September 2025, this amount shall not exceed ₱3,000 for residential customers, subject to applicable rules
  2. ERC Certificate of Completion (COC) Fee - P1,500, required for your Net-Metering Application payable to the Energy Regulatory Commission
  3. Local Government Unit (LGU) Fees - for the issuance of the Certificate of Final Electrical Inspection (CFEI), which vary by LGU

This depends on the configuration of your RE system.

If your system does not have a battery, your RE system will automatically stop supplying power during an outage through its anti-islanding function. This safety feature detects the loss of grid supply and prevents your system from energizing Meralco’s distribution grid during an outage, helping protect personnel working on the lines, as well as you, your family, and the community from assuming that the lines are not energized.

If your system has a battery, your RE system may continue to provide backup power to selected or critical loads, depending on the design and configuration of your system. During battery operation, these loads must be isolated from Meralco’s distribution grid, and the battery must not export power to the grid.

Customers may use a BESS with their RE installation provided that the system complies with Meralco’s technical and safety requirements below:

  1. The RE facility should contain a transfer switch or any form of mechanism that isolates the loads served by the battery from the utility.
  2. The transferring mechanism can be manual or automatic and can be located externally or internally to the inverter unit. 
  3. While the hybrid inverter is in battery mode, the RE facility and the critical loads should be isolated from the distribution grid. Under no circumstances shall the battery be able to export power to the distribution grid.

  4. A warning signage should be applied in a visible location on the battery, in uppercase with a minimum height of 6mm and shall read as follows:

Installing and operating a solar system without registering under Meralco’s Net-Metering program is acceptable if you do not intend to receive bill credits for any excess energy produced by your system. However, you should still inform Meralco about your solar installation and register under the Zero Export program. Registration helps ensure that your system is properly installed and safely connected to the grid, reducing safety and technical risks.

Please note that Meralco will not be responsible for any damages or losses resulting from unauthorized installations.

Fire and electrocution hazards 
Improperly installed solar systems may cause electrical faults that could lead to fires or electrocution.

Safety risk to linemen 
Without proper safety features, your solar system may continue sending electricity to power lines during outages, which can endanger Meralco linemen doing repair and maintenance work.

Possible power fluctuations in your area 
Incorrect installations may affect power quality and cause voltage fluctuations that could affect nearby customers.

To help ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with applicable requirements, customers are encouraged to apply for either Net-Metering or the Zero Export program.
